Tick precautions still matter during fall trips outdoors, whether residents are hunting, picking pumpkins or enjoying the foliage, the Cayuga County Health Department says.
In a seasonal reminder, the department urged residents to protect themselves and their pets and to check exposed skin and clothing frequently.
The department recommends light-colored, long-sleeved clothing, tucking pant legs into socks and braiding long hair. Light-colored fabric can make ticks easier to spot.
Use an Environmental Protection Agency-registered insect repellent and carry a first-aid kit with tick-removal supplies when spending time in wooded areas, the department advises.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says tick exposure can occur year-round. Wooded and brushy areas, animals and even yards can expose people to ticks.
After coming indoors, check clothing, gear and pets. The CDC also recommends showering within two hours, which can help wash off unattached ticks and provides an opportunity for a tick check.
