Auburn Bombardier demolition plan calls for weekend street closures

Demolition at the former Bombardier facility in Auburn is expected to continue into early 2027. The privately funded project calls for separate weekend closures on Columbus and Orchard streets.

Auburn Bombardier demolition plan calls for weekend street closures

Demolition of the former Bombardier facility in Auburn is underway, with additional work expected to bring weekend closures to Columbus and Orchard streets before the project wraps up in early February 2027.

The work is being paid for entirely by the private property owner, with no city money or grant funding involved, according to a city project update issued Thursday. Auburn is helping communicate the schedule because of the anticipated temporary road closures.

First building scheduled for completion Friday

Demolition of Building 4, an internal building along the property’s eastern boundary, began this week and is expected to be completed Friday, Nov. 6. Hazardous material abatement at that building was finished before demolition began.

Work on the next buildings depends on completing their hazardous material removal. The city’s schedule anticipates demolition continuing in phases through the winter.

Columbus Street closure expected in December phase

Hazardous material abatement has begun at Buildings 30 and 30A, the westernmost buildings along Columbus Street, and is expected to continue through the beginning of December. Demolition is anticipated to begin in mid-December once those buildings are cleared.

That phase is expected to require a temporary closure of Columbus Street between the Arterial and Orchard Street. The closure would last one weekend, starting Friday afternoon and ending Sunday afternoon.

The contractor will provide two weeks’ notice before the closure. Residents and businesses in the area will receive door hangers with contact information for the site superintendent.

Access will be maintained at all times for residents on Wallace Avenue and Underwood Street, according to the city.

Orchard Street work follows in January

Hazardous material abatement at Buildings 3 and 3A, the southernmost buildings along Orchard Street, is expected to begin in mid-November. Demolition is anticipated in early January 2027 after that work is cleared.

The city expects Orchard Street to close between Columbus Street and Baker Avenue for one weekend during that demolition phase. That closure also would run from Friday afternoon through Sunday afternoon, with two weeks’ notice from the contractor.

Full project completion and the contractor’s departure from the site are anticipated by early February 2027. The contractor will provide updates to the city, and the schedule may change.
