Chuck was born on July 19, 1935 to his parents Horace James and Thelma Brewer Elwell, in Waterloo, NY.
He married his high school sweetheart Nancy Ann Moore, on February 1, 1957. Chuck and Nancy owned and operated the Rushville Hardware for several years before moving to Florida to be near his sister Elane and her family. There he enjoyed what he called the most exciting job of his life working at the Kennedy Space Center in the Vertical Assembly Building. He watched the Saturn Apollo Rocket being built and launched. Still looking for a business of his own, he moved his family back to New York to continue the search. In March of 1970 Chuck started working for the New York Life Insurance Company. He broke all sales records for new agents and continued a successful career until he retired.
Chuck lived in the village of Rushville for most of his life. He was a member of the First Congregational Church of Rushville and actively supported the community. He also served on the Village Board for several years.
Chuck was an avid lover of the outdoors. His interests included hiking, canoeing, archery, and bicycling. He and Nancy had a camp in the Adirondacks for many years and that provided opportunities to spend many hours outside. He loved having family and friends visit the camp and join in his adventures. He also loved traveling the United States to visit family, especially his travels "out West".
Remembering others from the community
His love for family was immense. Chuck took great pride in his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews.
Chuck is survived by his wife Nancy of 69 years, their children Laurie Elwell Hey and Joel (Joane) Elwell; grandchildren Clint (Winsome) Hey, Alaina (Matt) Willson, Ben (Erinn) Hey, Caitrin Elwell (Paaqua Grant), Nyssa (Neal) Curtis; 11 great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews Bob King, Chris Herbert, Lynn Powell, and Jay King.
He is predeceased by his parents, Horace and Thelma Elwell, his sister Elane Elwell King, and his son-in-law Jim Hey.
