A fourth term representing Greater Rochester in the state Senate will center on universal health care, free community college and high-speed rail, Sen. Jeremy Cooney said Tuesday night as he declared reelection victory.

The Democrat and Working Families Party candidate for the 56th District called the result a decisive victory in a Nov. 3 campaign statement.

Cooney said he was preparing to return to Albany as chairman of the Senate Transportation Committee and would continue advocating for Rochester and the upstate region.

His statement framed the election as a turning point for Rochester, citing what he described as new Democratic leadership in Washington, a stronger Democratic majority in Albany and Democratic victories across Monroe County. He urged those elected to turn the celebration into action on longstanding promises.

Cooney cited cuts to health coverage, rising utility prices, detention of legal immigrants and the economic effects of an overseas war as reasons New York should act. He presented universal health care, free community college and high-speed rail as policies he would continue to pursue.

“I am honored to serve my hometown for a fourth term, and am grateful to have earned a decisive victory,” Cooney said.
