Woman avoids jail in Steuben County surrogacy fraud case

An Erie County woman accused of forging documents to arrange a surrogacy without her husband’s knowledge has pleaded guilty to three misdemeanor charges, according to WENY-TV.

MaryBeth Lewis, 69, of Elma, received a one-year conditional discharge after pleading guilty in Steuben County Court to attempted offering a false instrument for filing.

Lewis was indicted in 2023 on 30 charges, including attempted kidnapping and forgery, following an investigation involving twins born through a surrogate.

Prosecutors dropped the remaining charges under the plea agreement.

A separate legal dispute over custody of the children remains ongoing.
