State orders Naples pie shop to remove grape-shaped sign

New York's transportation department has ordered Monica's Pies owner Monica Schenk to remove a grape-shaped sign along Route 21 in Naples after about 25 years, according to News 8 WROC.

Schenk said the state's letter calls the sign an unauthorized encroachment on the road right of way and requires a highway work permit before she removes it.

She said the sign was modeled after one her father made for the business.

Schenk questioned why the state raised the issue now and said she would not remove the sign unless she had to.

WROC said the department had not answered its questions about the cited law or whether a permit fee would apply.
