Two residents, two officers injured in Palmyra apartment fire

Two residents and two police officers suffered minor injuries Wednesday in an apartment fire in Palmyra, according to first responders.

Crews responded around 12:30 p.m. to Park Hill Apartments on Johnson Street after receiving a report of a fire with people trapped inside.

Two police officers helped evacuate residents before firefighters arrived, while two residents escaped by jumping from a window.

The residents were injured in the jump, and the officers were treated for smoke inhalation exposure.

All four were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment, and no firefighters were injured.

A dog and a cat died in the fire.

First responders said flames spread rapidly inside one apartment, but closed doors helped contain the fire to that unit and prevented it from spreading throughout the complex.

Smoke affected other apartments, leaving some residents unable to return home Wednesday night.

Those residents were expected to be allowed back Thursday.

The cause remains under investigation.
