Cornell professor Matthew Hall will discuss falling birth rates, population aging, migration and growing diversity in a free public lecture on Wednesday, Oct. 28, in Ithaca.
The Phi Beta Kappa Distinguished Lecture, “The New Population Problem: Fewer Babies, Older People, More Diverse Places,” begins at 4:30 p.m. in Lewis Auditorium, Room G76 of Goldwin Smith Hall. Cornell says the public is invited.
Hall, a professor of public policy and sociology in Cornell's Brooks School of Public Policy, plans to examine how demographic changes affect work, housing, schools, families, politics and other institutions at both global and local scales.
Laura Brown, Cornell's Phi Beta Kappa faculty president, said changes in population can move faster than the institutions built to serve people. She pointed to labor shortages, school enrollment, housing demand and political representation as issues shaped by demographic trends.
