New York gets .2 million federal home-visiting award

New York's health department received a $15.2 million federal award to support voluntary home visits for pregnant people and families with young children, according to fiscal 2026 awards published by the Health Resources and Services Administration.

The $15,176,887 award includes $11,686,543 in base funding and $3,490,344 in federal matching funds. The federal program is known as Maternal, Infant, and Early Childhood Home Visiting, or MIECHV.

The award is $696,805 above New York's fiscal 2025 total of $14,480,082. The base amount is unchanged; the increase comes from matching funds. To qualify for that portion, states must identify $1 in nonfederal support for every $3 in federal matching funds, HRSA says.

The New York State Department of Health oversees the state's MIECHV-funded services. The funding award does not identify how much will go to individual counties or providers, so it does not establish a separate Finger Lakes allocation.

How the visits work ——————-

Home visiting is voluntary. Trained workers meet with expectant parents and families with young children to offer support during pregnancy and early childhood. The program can connect families with health care and other resources, and its evidence-based models are intended to support child development and parenting.

The federal program serves families through the period before a child enters kindergarten. HRSA says the visits are focused on communities with greater risks for poor maternal and child health outcomes, including rural areas and low-income households.

The Association of State and Tribal Home Visiting Initiatives, which announced New York's award Monday, said families may begin receiving visits before birth or enroll later in early childhood. The release did not specify additional New York service sites or an enrollment date tied to the new award.

The broader federal award ————————-

HRSA announced more than $525 million in fiscal 2026 awards to 56 state and jurisdiction recipients, calling it the largest federal investment in the program's history. Its awards list shows that 55 of the 56 recipients received matching funds.

The federal agency reported that MIECHV-funded programs provided more than 1 million visits to over 158,000 parents and children nationwide in fiscal 2025. Those are national figures, not a count of New York families served by the newly announced award.
