Chemung Canal Trust Company plans new name for Finger Lakes branches

Chemung Canal Trust Company plans to adopt the name Canal Bank & Trust, N.A., bringing its branches and its Capital Bank and Canal Bank divisions under one name. The change will affect branches across the Finger Lakes, but the bank says customers do not need to take any action.

The Elmira-based bank’s parent company, Chemung Financial Corporation, announced the plan Thursday. It expects to introduce the new name and logo in the coming months and roll them out across branches and digital services throughout 2027.

In the Finger Lakes, the bank currently operates two branches in Auburn, two in Ithaca, and one each in Montour Falls, Seneca Falls and Watkins Glen. The Auburn offices are on Genesee Street and Grant Avenue; the Ithaca offices are on Hanshaw Road and Elmira Road. The bank also operates branches in nearby Southern Tier communities, including Bath, Corning, Elmira and Horseheads.

The company said the change will bring together names it has used in different markets since 2011. It expects the new identity to appear on branch signs, websites, digital banking channels and other communications.

Customers can continue using their existing accounts, checks, debit cards, online and mobile banking, and loan payment services, the company said. It said branch teams, products and services will remain the same.

“This is a historic and important next step for our company,” CEO Anders M. Tomson said in the announcement. He said the Canal Bank & Trust name reflects the bank’s history while giving its locations a shared identity.

Chemung Canal Trust Company was established in 1833. Its parent company said it has $2.8 billion in assets and operates 30 offices through the bank.
