Rochester Regional Health's Lipson Cancer Institute has been named to Becker's Hospital Review's list of hospitals and health systems with great oncology programs for the third time. The recognition comes as the cancer network expands treatment capacity in the Rochester area.
Lipson serves about 25,000 patients a year across 13 counties in Western New York and the Finger Lakes, according to Rochester Regional Health. The system said the annual Becker's list considers clinical care, innovation, research and access, though the announcement did not provide a numerical ranking.
The honor follows two changes to the network's treatment facilities this year. Rochester General Hospital introduced the Varian Ethos Adaptive Radiation Therapy System, which uses daily imaging to help clinicians adjust radiation treatment as a patient's anatomy changes.
The approach is intended to target tumors while limiting radiation exposure to nearby healthy tissue, the health system said. The announcement did not provide patient outcome data comparing the new system with other radiation treatments.
At Unity Hospital, a $9 million Lipson expansion is under construction. The project is expected to double infusion capacity from 10 to 20 chairs and add a dedicated oncology pharmacy, along with more clinical and research space.
The health system said the additional capacity responds to growing demand for cancer care. It did not give a completion date or say when the new infusion chairs would begin serving patients.
Lipson's network offers medical, surgical and radiation oncology, genetic testing, precision medicine and support services. Rochester Regional Health said the institute has held accreditation from the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer for more than 40 consecutive years and has network cancer program accreditation.
Richard Davis, Rochester Regional Health's chief executive, credited the program's care teams for the recognition. Jeffrey Haynes, executive medical director of oncology, said the system aims to pair newer treatments with support for patients through diagnosis, treatment and survivorship.
