Two hospitalized with serious injuries after head-on crash in Caroline

Two people were hospitalized with serious injuries Thursday morning after a head-on crash on Route 79 in the town of Caroline, according to New York State Police.

Troopers said the crash happened around 6:50 a.m. in the 3300 block of Slaterville Road, also known as Route 79.

A preliminary investigation found a 2010 Chevrolet HHR driven by Jeffrey Belden, 42, of Richford was traveling east when it collided head-on with a westbound 2021 Chevrolet Equinox driven by Donovan Flanigan, 32, of Newark Valley.

Belden had to be extricated from his vehicle by firefighters, police said. He was taken by ambulance to Cayuga Medical Center and later flown by helicopter to Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester for treatment of serious injuries.

Flanigan was taken by ambulance to Guthrie Robert Packer Hospital for treatment of serious injuries.

The State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit responded to assist with the investigation.

Police said the investigation remains ongoing.
