Harmony Food Pantry is a community-based food pantry in Waterloo serving individuals and families across Seneca County as demand for food assistance continues to grow. Josh Durso guest hosts and sits down with board members Claudia Faust and Rebecca Carson to discuss how the pantry has evolved since its founding, why more families are seeking help, the transportation and affordability challenges facing local residents, and the importance of treating every client with dignity. They also explain what items are most needed, how the pantry’s Sponsor-a-Shelf initiative works, and how community members can donate or volunteer.
How to support the pantry and your neighbors
Harmony Food Pantry is located at First Presbyterian Church, 42 E. Main St. in Waterloo. The pantry is open from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Saturdays, and Seneca County residents can receive groceries twice per month.
The pantry is especially seeking personal care and household items that cannot be purchased with SNAP benefits, including toilet paper, shampoo, conditioner, soap, toothpaste, toothbrushes, deodorant, feminine hygiene products, diapers, baby wipes, razors and dish soap.
Other high-need items include flour, sugar, brown sugar, cooking oil, canned meats, tuna, peanut butter, jelly, pasta, rice, cereal, macaroni and cheese, soup, canned fruits and vegetables, and foods that can be eaten with little or no cooking.
Monetary donations, fresh produce and other food and household donations are also accepted. Businesses, organizations and individuals can participate in the pantry’s Sponsor-a-Shelf initiative by donating money toward a particular category or collecting specific items.
