Residents and business owners in parts of Grimes County, Texas, can review preliminary federal flood maps that could affect local building standards, development decisions and future flood insurance requirements.
The preliminary Flood Insurance Rate Maps cover portions of Plantersville and Todd Mission as well as unincorporated areas of the county, FEMA said.
The maps identify Special Flood Hazard Areas, which are considered at high risk for flooding. FEMA said flooding also occurs outside the areas shown as most vulnerable.
Property owners may raise questions or concerns during the appeal and comment period. The agency encouraged residents to review the maps with their local floodplain administrator.
The maps are available through FEMA's Flood Map Changes Viewer and Map Service Center. A FEMA map specialist can also identify a community's floodplain administrator and answer questions at 877-336-2627 or FEMA-FMIX@fema.dhs.gov.
FEMA said cost-saving insurance options may be available to property owners newly mapped into a high-risk flood zone. Residents can discuss coverage with an insurance agent or consult the federal FloodSmart program.
