The leader of NASA's Psyche mission will give a free public lecture at Cornell University on Friday, Sept. 11.
Lindy Elkins-Tanton will speak at 7 p.m. in Rockefeller Hall's Schwartz Auditorium about the mission to explore the metal-rich asteroid Psyche. The spacecraft is expected to reach the asteroid in 2029 after a May flyby of Mars.
Elkins-Tanton is the mission's principal investigator and director of the Space Sciences Laboratory at the University of California, Berkeley. Her talk will cover what scientists know about the asteroid and provide mission updates.
Weather permitting, observing time at Cornell's Fuertes Observatory will follow the lecture. Cornell's astronomy department is hosting the event as its Terzian Lecture.
