National gas average stays above through August

The national average price for regular gasoline stood at $4.09 a gallon Thursday, down 1 cent from a week earlier, AAA reported.

AAA said August is poised to become the most expensive August on record at the pump because the national average has remained above $4 every day this month. The previous August record was set in 2022.

The organization attributed the elevated prices in part to continued volatility in the Strait of Hormuz, with crude oil prices holding in the $80-per-barrel range.

The national average price for electricity at a public electric-vehicle charging station was unchanged at 42 cents per kilowatt-hour.
