Trump declares national emergency over foreign risks to U.S. power grid

President Donald Trump has declared a national emergency aimed at limiting foreign-made equipment that officials say could threaten the reliability and security of the nation's bulk-power system.

The executive order generally bars certain foreign-produced grid equipment, software and digital systems when transactions create risks of sabotage, unauthorized access or major disruption.

The order gives the energy secretary authority to identify risky equipment, place conditions on existing systems and issue rules for future purchases. It does not apply to facilities used for local electric distribution.

The White House said growing electricity demand from advanced manufacturing, artificial intelligence and defense production has increased the importance of securing equipment supply chains.

The administration did not identify specific prohibited vendors in its fact sheet. Implementation details are expected through Energy Department rules and security reviews.
