Nurses push for stronger protections after hospital attacks

Two Ontario County nurses are calling for stronger protections for health care workers after a woman previously charged in hospital attacks was arrested again last week, according to 13WHAM.

Canandaigua police said Alyna Lindenau was charged with assault and making a terroristic threat after an Aug. 17 incident at F.F. Thompson Hospital in which she allegedly injured an employee and threatened to burn the hospital and kill staff.

Lindenau was also charged in July with assault for kicking and seriously injuring a nurse at Thompson, while the Ontario County Sheriff’s Office said she faced harassment charges after a June incident involving EMS workers.

Nurses Ehren Strohm and Dixie Kendall are working with state Sen. Pam Helming on the PROTECT Act, which would allow judges to use a risk assessment when considering a defendant’s release and would expand access to mental health support.

Strohm and Kendall are also developing a resource toolkit to help health care workers navigate criminal charges, workers’ compensation, the court system and mental health support after an assault.
