The New York Yankees nearly erased a three-run deficit Saturday afternoon, but their late comeback came up short in a 4-3 loss to the Toronto Blue Jays at Yankee Stadium.
Toronto starter Dylan Cease kept the Yankees without a hit for 6.2 innings before New York finally broke through in the seventh. Jazz Chisholm Jr. looped a single into right field to end the no-hit bid, and Austin Wells followed with an RBI single that brought the Yankees within 3-1 and chased Cease from the game.
The Yankees had another opportunity after José Caballero was hit by a pitch to load the bases, but Trent Grisham grounded out to end the inning.
New York pulled even closer in the eighth when Luis Gárcia Jr. launched a two-run home run off Tyler Rogers, cutting Toronto’s lead to one. Chisholm then led off the ninth with a double, but the Yankees could not complete the comeback as Wells struck out, Caballero grounded out and Grisham struck out to end the game.
Cease finished with one run allowed on two hits and five walks while striking out eight over 6.2 innings.

They left runners on third base with one out in each of the first two innings and finished 1-for-12 with runners in scoring position.
The Blue Jays collected 15 hits and built an early lead against Ryan Weathers, who allowed two runs on eight hits over 3.1 innings before exiting in the fourth with left forearm discomfort.
Yerry De Los Santos escaped a bases-loaded jam after replacing Weathers but later allowed a run, while Nathan Lukes added a solo home run in the eighth that proved to be the difference.
The Yankees and Blue Jays conclude their three-game series Sunday at 1:35 p.m. Carlos Rodón is scheduled to start for New York against Toronto’s Jose Soriano.
