Construction is beginning on a $2.8 million state-funded infrastructure project to replace the Champlin Beach pier in Urbana and expand public access and docking on Keuka Lake.
The project will remove the existing pier and install an Americans with Disabilities Act-compliant dock system with a gazebo, tour-boat access and other waterfront amenities, according to the New York Department of State.
Funding includes a $1.35 million NY Forward award and $1.47 million through the state's Local Waterfront Revitalization Program. State and local officials said the additional docking is intended to draw boaters to Hammondsport businesses and improve access to the Champlin swim beach and picnic area.
The pier is part of a broader waterfront plan for the Town of Urbana and Village of Hammondsport. The state announced completion of the $1.26 million Glenn H. Curtiss Park project in May under the 2015 Keuka Lake Waterfront Redevelopment Master Plan.
Other NY Forward projects include $1.6 million to reconstruct Liberty and Mill streets for pedestrian access and drainage improvements; $885,000 to convert the historic Curtiss School into rental housing and community space; and $362,000 for local branding, a heritage trail and wayfinding signs.
The program is also providing $172,000 to create a bicycle-friendly coffee shop and cafe at a former service station, along with $118,000 for renovations at 31 Shethar St. to support a restaurant and bar.
Hammondsport and Urbana were selected as the Southern Tier's second-round NY Forward winner in 2024.
