The New York Mets finished off a three-game sweep of the Washington Nationals on Sunday afternoon, holding on for a 4-3 victory at Citi Field behind another strong outing from Christian Scott and a timely home run from Luis Torrens.
Scott provided the Mets (56-69) with one of his best starts of the season, working into the seventh inning for the first time in 2026. The right-hander held Washington to two runs through six innings before running into trouble in the seventh. After issuing a leadoff walk, Scott surrendered an RBI double to Keibert Ruiz and a single to Jacob Young, putting runners at the corners.
Nate Lavender entered and recorded two important outs to limit the damage and finish Scott’s outing. Scott was charged with three earned runs on five hits over 6.1 innings, striking out seven and walking two.
Torrens supplied the biggest offensive swing for New York. His two-run home run in the fourth inning put the Mets ahead 3-2 and continued an impressive power surge. Torrens has now hit four home runs over his last 17 at-bats after entering the recent stretch with only two home runs all season. He now has six.
Kodai Senga then closed the door in the ninth inning, needing only 11 pitches to earn his first one-run save opportunity. He struck out two batters while retiring Washington in order.
Bo Bichette also continued his recent offensive surge, going 3-for-3 with a triple and a walk.
Carson Benge made several outstanding plays in right field, including a sliding catch and a backhanded grab near the wall, while also recording an outfield assist. He went 0-for-4 at the plate, ending his 18-game on-base streak.
Luis Robert Jr. made his first career major league start in left field after previously playing 591 games in center.
The Mets open a three-game series against the San Diego Padres Monday at 7:10 p.m. Nolan McLean will start against Walker Buehler.
