The New York Mets placed closer Devin Williams on the 15-day injured list Monday with a right shoulder strain, creating another late-inning question for a bullpen already depleted by the trade deadline.
Williams, who missed time last week because of right arm fatigue, returned Friday in Pittsburgh and allowed two runs before being sidelined again. Interim manager Andy Green said the Mets do not believe the injury is long-term, but Williams’ absence leaves New York without its established closer as it looks toward the final weeks of the season.
Williams is 4.66 with 15 saves in 42 appearances during the first season of his three-year, $51 million contract.
Daniel Duarte, Dedniel Núñez, and Jefry Yan are among the candidates for save opportunities. Kodai Senga also could emerge as an option after transitioning from the rotation to the bullpen.
