Cato man charged after cocaine allegedly found during transport

A Cato man faces a drug possession charge after Cayuga County sheriff's deputies said he concealed cocaine while being transported following an earlier arrest.

Deputies arrested Daniel J. Root, 56, on July 30 and charged him with seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, according to the sheriff's office.

The charge stems from a July 24 domestic incident in the town of Cato. The sheriff's office said Root was in custody and being transported to the Public Safety Building when he allegedly concealed cocaine on his person.

Deputies allege Root tried to discard the cocaine in the Public Safety Building parking lot while getting out of a patrol vehicle.

Root, who was already being held at the Cayuga County Jail, was processed and brought before a centralized arraignment court judge. He remained in custody on charges connected to the earlier arrest.
