The New York Mets (49-66) erased a late deficit and outlasted the Cleveland Guardians 6-5 in 10 innings on Wednesday night at Progressive Field. After surrendering a three-run lead, New York tied the game in the ninth on a Cleveland error before Bo Bichette lined a go-ahead RBI single in the 10th to secure its second straight victory.
The Mets grabbed an early advantage behind the long ball. Brett Baty and Jorge Polanco, who snapped an 0-for-26 skid, hit back-to-back home runs in the third inning before Jared Young added an RBI double in the fourth to make it 3-0. Christian Scott carried that lead into the middle innings but settled for a no-decision after allowing three runs on six hits over five innings while striking out seven. Carson Benge restored New York’s lead with a solo homer in the sixth, his second in as many games, before Young tripled later in the inning but was left stranded.
Cleveland answered in the seventh, taking a 5-4 lead after an error helped extend the inning against Dedniel Núñez. The Mets refused to go away, loading the bases in the ninth before A.J. Ewing’s sharp grounder forced a throwing error by Brayan Rocchio that tied the game. In the 10th, Bichette drove a single down the right-field line to plate the go-ahead run. Daniel Duarte then stranded the tying run in the bottom half to earn the save.
New York also received key contributions from its bullpen. Jefry Yan escaped a bases-loaded jam in his team debut, Chayce McDermott kept the game within reach, and Duarte finished off five combined innings of relief to preserve the win.
The Mets conclude their three-game series against Cleveland on Thursday with first pitch scheduled for 1:10 p.m. Nolan McLean (7-7, 3.29 ERA) is slated to face Foster Griffin (12-3, 3.06 ERA).
