The New York Mets continued their busy trade deadline Monday, sending right-hander Clay Holmes and outfielder Tyrone Taylor to the Chicago Cubs in exchange for infielder Jefferson Rojas, according to ESPN’s Jeff Passan.
Rojas, ranked as Chicago’s No. 2 prospect, gives the Mets another highly regarded young talent as the organization continues to add for the future. The 21-year-old Rojas has played multiple infield positions while posting a .799 OPS at Double-A Knoxville this season.
Holmes’ tenure in New York ends after an injury-shortened season that began with ace-level production. The right-hander posted a 2.39 ERA and 1.10 WHIP through his first nine starts before suffering a fractured fibula on May 15 when he was struck by a line drive against the Yankees. The injury sidelined Holmes for much of the season, and with a player option for 2027 that he is widely expected to decline, the Mets elected to move him before the deadline.
Taylor also departs after parts of three seasons with the club, having recently rediscovered his power following a stint on the injured list.
The move is the latest in a series of deadline deals by New York, which has also traded Freddy Peralta, Luke Weaver, Huascar Brazoban, A.J. Minter, and Brooks Raley.
