The Las Vegas Aces defended their home floor at Michelob ULTRA Arena, beating expansion Portland Fire by a commanding 98-83 margin. The defending powerhouses improved their stellar record to 19-8 on the season with this impressive win. More importantly, they swept their regular-season series with Portland, with no doubt who was in control of this matchup from the first tip to the last buzzer.

Right from the jump, Las Vegas looked like a team on a serious mission. They played a wire-to-wire game, meaning they never trailed the Fire at any point during the contest. The Aces’ offense was operating at an elite level, shooting a blistering 58 percent from the floor overall. When a team is moving the basketball that well and hitting their open shots with such high efficiency, they become nearly impossible for any opponent to stop.
It was a true collective effort for the home team. Nine different players put points on the board for Las Vegas, keeping the Portland defenders constantly guessing and rotating. However, the heavy lifting was ultimately done by their undisputed superstars who shined the brightest under the bright arena lights.
Early Sparks and a Portland Push
A’ja Wilson set the aggressive tone almost immediately in the first quarter. She bullied her way in the paint to ten points and grabbed five rebounds in the opening frame alone, helping the Aces build a commanding 36-21 lead. But the Portland Fire, currently sitting at an 11-17 record, refused to just roll over and concede the game without a fight.
Early in the second quarter, Portland showed some real grit and determination. They went on a terrific 12-3 scoring run to make things very interesting. That burst of offensive momentum was capped by a tough, physical three-point play by Megan DiLeo, who led the Fire with a game-high twenty points. Suddenly, the Aces’ comfortable lead was cut to just six points at 39-33 and the hometown crowd could feel the tension rise.
Star Power Takes Over in Vegas
That brief Portland spark was exactly the wake-up call Las Vegas needed to regain control. They immediately answered the challenge with a crushing 14-4 run of their own. Chelsea Gray and Jackie Young took over the closing moments of the half, sending the Aces into the locker room with a comfortable 53-37 advantage.
Young finished the night with twenty-five points on a highly efficient 9-for-14 shooting performance. Grey ran the offence beautifully all night, tacking on seventeen points and dishing out seven crucial assists. Wilson remained the ultimate defensive and offensive anchor, finishing with twenty-eight points and fourteen massive rebounds. She was also nearly perfect from the free-throw line, sinking thirteen of her fourteen attempts.
Looking Ahead to the Next Challenge
While Frieda Buhner added a solid sixteen bench points for Portland, the Fire simply could not close the gap to single digits in the crucial fourth quarter. Both squads now turn their attention to a busy weekend slate of games. Las Vegas will stay at home to prepare for a massive Thursday night clash against the New York Liberty. Meanwhile, the Portland Fire will travel back to the Moda Center, hoping to bounce back quickly when they host the Indiana Fever on Friday.
