The owners of a 47-acre property in Owasco face a proposed $7,500 fine after sediment entered Dutch Hollow Brook during logging operations, according to The Citizen.
A Cayuga County hearing officer determined the Alger/Murphy Irrevocable Trust violated Owasco Lake watershed rules by allowing soil and other material to flow into the lake tributary.
Hearing officer Michael McKeon said the owners could have faced an $18,000 maximum penalty but recommended reducing the fine to $1,000 if required protections are installed within 30 days.
The Cayuga County Board of Health is scheduled to vote Tuesday on a formal order imposing the penalty and corrective measures.
