House passes congressional stock-trading ban backed by Langworthy

The House passed legislation Wednesday that would prohibit members of Congress and their spouses from trading individual stocks, according to U.S. Rep. Nick Langworthy's office.

Langworthy said he co-sponsored the Stop Insider Trading Act and supported its passage. The New York Republican called on the Senate to approve the bill and send it to the president.

"Americans deserve to know that every decision their elected officials make is guided by what's best for the country, not their personal stock portfolios," Langworthy said in a statement.

Langworthy said he has supported a stock-trading ban since entering Congress. He argued that passage would help restore public trust by limiting lawmakers' ability to benefit from information unavailable to the public.

The release did not include the House vote count or details about the bill's enforcement provisions or effective date.
