Sandy Creek Boat Launch closes due to high Lake Ontario water

The Sandy Creek Boat Launch in Hamlin closed immediately Thursday because high Lake Ontario water had significantly submerged its docks, state officials said. The state Department of Environmental Conservation ordered the Monroe County site closed after an inspection found conditions that posed a public-safety concern.

DEC did not provide an estimated reopening date. Boaters are being directed to use alternative launch sites in Monroe County while the closure remains in effect.

The launch provides access to Lake Ontario from the town of Hamlin. DEC said the closure was necessary because of the extent to which the docks were underwater.

Questions about the closure may be directed to the DEC Region 8 Fisheries Office at 585-226-2466.
