The Buffalo Sabres added another key piece to their future blue line Friday night, selecting defenseman Daxon Rudolph with the No. 4 overall pick in the 2026 NHL Draft at KeyBank Center.
Buffalo had only acquired the selection earlier this week as part of the blockbuster trade that sent defenseman Bowen Byram to the Chicago Blackhawks. Despite speculation the pick could be moved again, the Sabres chose to keep it and use it on one of the draft’s top defensive prospects.
Rudolph, an 18-year-old right-shot defenseman, is coming off a standout season with the Prince Albert Raiders of the Western Hockey League. The 6-foot-3 blueliner recorded 78 points in 68 regular-season games before elevating his play in the postseason, totaling 27 points in 19 playoff contests.
Known for his offensive instincts and ability to move the puck, Rudolph is expected to continue his development at the University of Denver. His current plan is to spend one season at Denver before making the jump to the NHL.
The Sabres remain active in the opening round and are also scheduled to make the No. 20 overall selection later Friday night.
