New York Sea Grant will host a free workshop next month focused on shoreline bluff erosion and ways to manage vulnerable coastal features along Lake Ontario.
The workshop is scheduled for 1 to 3:30 p.m. Friday, July 24, at Wadhams Lodge in Powder Mills Park in Pittsford. Registration is required by July 22.
Roy Widrig, New York Sea Grant coastal processes and hazards specialist, will lead the session. The program will focus on bluff erosion mechanics, control options, permitting and the New York State Department of State Coastal Compliance Review.
Bluffs are steep banks made of loosely compacted soil, silt, sand, clay or glacial till. Wind, water, waves and human activity can cause erosion at the base or from above, while slumping can happen during high water, large wave impacts or water flow over the bluff face.
New York Sea Grant said some of the state's best-known bluffs are along Lake Ontario at Chimney Bluffs State Park in Wayne County. Other bluff areas include locations near Fair Haven and Hamlin Beach along Lake Ontario and Angola along Lake Erie.
Widrig is co-author of an informational guide on erosion and recession of New York's coastal bluffs and author of a guide to native plants for Great Lakes shorelines.
