Students at Midlakes Elementary School exceeded expectations during this year’s Kids’ Heart Challenge, raising more than $8,600 to support children with heart conditions and fund cardiovascular research through the American Heart Association.
The fundraiser, which replaced the school’s longtime Jump Rope for Heart program, set an initial goal of $5,000. Students ultimately raised $8,620.50, according to the Phelps-Clifton Springs Central School District. The money will support medicine, research and medical procedures related to heart disease and stroke.
School officials said the fundraising effort also helped educate families about heart health and emergency preparedness. A total of 33 families learned hands-only CPR during the challenge, while 95 students registered to participate.
Physical education instructor Trent Jones credited students, families and the broader community for the strong turnout and fundraising effort.
Sixth grader Alexa Sinack was the top individual fundraiser, collecting more than $600. Her family has a personal connection to the American Heart Association after multiple relatives were affected by a genetic heart condition, including an uncle who died from the disease in 2023 at age 25.
Several other students also raised more than $300 individually, while Ms. Fischer’s third grade class generated more than $900 overall. Third grade students collectively raised more than $2,100 during the campaign.
Because of the fundraising effort, Midlakes Elementary has also been entered into a drawing for a $10,000 gym makeover.
