The New York Mets closed a once-promising road trip with a frustrating 5-1 loss to the Arizona Diamondbacks on Sunday in Phoenix, falling to 15-25 after managing just two runs across the final two games of the series. Arizona improved to 19-20 behind another dominant outing from left-hander Eduardo Rodriguez, while New York’s sloppy defense and continued offensive struggles proved too much to overcome.
ORANGE GAME WEEK: Syracuse football returns from bye week for road matchup against UConn (preview) Rodriguez silenced the Mets for the second time this season, allowing one run on four hits across 8.1 innings while improving to 4-0 with a 2.25 ERA. New York was hitless through five innings before Carson Benge lined a single into center in the sixth, eventually scoring on Luis Torrens’ opposite-field double. Torrens accounted for half of the Mets’ four hits. Juan Soto’s struggles also continued during the loss, as he flew out twice with runners aboard and finished the nine-game trip hitting .121.
Defensive mistakes helped Arizona pull away. Andy Ibanez made two throwing errors in his Mets debut at third base, including a costly miscue in the sixth inning that opened the door for three unearned runs. Ketel Marte capped the rally with a two-run triple off David Peterson, who otherwise delivered another effective bulk-relief outing with five innings, three strikeouts and no walks. Earlier, a failed pickoff sequence involving Mark Vientos contributed to Arizona’s first two runs.
The Mets open a three-game series against the Detroit Tigers on Tuesday at Citi Field. First pitch is scheduled for 7:10 p.m. Neither team has announced a starting pitcher.
