Max Fried struggles as Yankees blanked by Brewers in series opener

Max Fried labored through his shortest outing in weeks while the New York Yankees managed just three hits in a 6-0 loss to the Milwaukee Brewers on Friday night at American Family Field. The Yankees dropped to 26-13 while the Brewers improved to 20-16.

Milwaukee seized control in the second inning after Fried lost command of the strike zone. Gary Sánchez opened the frame with a single before Fried issued back-to-back walks to Andrew Vaughn and Luis Rengifo on eight straight balls. Brandon Lockridge and Sal Frelick followed with RBI singles before Joey Ortiz and Jackson Chourio added run-scoring plays to cap a four-run inning.

Fried allowed four runs despite soft contact throughout the inning, with none of the Brewers’ RBI singles exceeding 87.2 mph off the bat. The left-hander fell to 4-2 on the season after another rocky frame later pushed Milwaukee’s advantage to six.

The Yankees had no answer for rookie flamethrower Jacob Misiorowski, who dominated over six scoreless innings while repeatedly reaching triple digits. Misiorowski struck out 12, touched 103.6 mph and carried a no-hit bid into the sixth inning before José Caballero broke it up. Caballero finished with two of New York’s three hits.

Spencer Jones made his MLB debut for the Yankees and walked once while striking out twice. Kervin Jones also debuted and provided two innings of relief, allowing one run.

Lockridge’s night ended painfully in the fourth inning when he crashed into an unpadded section of the left-field wall chasing a foul ball and had to be carted off the field.

Box Score

The Yankees continue their series against Milwaukee on Saturday night at 7:15 p.m. Cam Schlittler (5-1, 1.52 ERA) is scheduled to start against Kyle Harrison (3-1, 2.12 ERA).
