CANANDAIGUA — A downtown gallery will open its doors twice this month as part of a pair of exhibit receptions aimed at showcasing regional artists and faculty work.
ArtSpace36, operated by Finger Lakes Community College, will host a closing reception for its current exhibit, “Mixed Messages: Stories Told Through Fragments and Fabric,” on Thursday, April 16, from 4:30 to 6 p.m. at its location on South Main Street.
The exhibit features work by artist Lydia Boddie-Rice, whose mixed-media collages combine fabric, paint, and layered materials to explore identity, memory, and emotional resonance. Her work emphasizes storytelling through texture and composition, inviting viewers to reflect on both what is revealed and what remains hidden.
Boddie-Rice described her approach as arranging materials like sentences — rearranged and reimagined to uncover new meaning. She said her pieces operate in the space between what is spoken and what is left unsaid, with each layer contributing to a broader narrative.
A second reception will follow the next week as ArtSpace36 opens its “Biennial Art Faculty Exhibit” on Thursday, April 23, also from 4:30 to 6 p.m. The exhibit will feature work from full-time and adjunct faculty at Finger Lakes Community College, offering the public a chance to view and engage with the creative output of instructors across disciplines.
Participating artists include Liz Brownell, Lacey McKinney, Barron Naegel, Sarah Morgan, Barbara Senglaub, Margaret Pence, Andrea Cornett, Michele Vair, Bradley Kellogg, Pat Tribastone, Maddie Corsaro and Amy McGowan.
ArtSpace36 is open from noon to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and noon to 4 p.m. on Sundays. The gallery shares space with the Ontario County Arts Council.
