The Buffalo Sabres reassigned defenseman Zach Metsa to the Rochester Americans on Thursday, a roster move that comes after a quietly effective stint at the NHL level.
Metsa, a 27-year-old rookie, appeared in 38 games and was on the ice for just two goals against all season, with the last coming in October. He also provided a modest offensive contribution, tallying two goals and four assists while finishing with a plus-20 rating. Despite that efficiency, Buffalo opted to rotate its defensive group.
Metsa had skated in five games alongside newly acquired Logan Stanley, but Conor Timmins reclaimed a spot in the lineup following a strong showing against the Boston Bruins on Wednesday. The Sabres continue to evaluate their options on the blue line, with Michael Kesselring and Luke Schenn also factoring into the mix.
Buffalo returns to action Friday night, hosting the Detroit Red Wings at 7 p.m. as they look to inch closer to ending their 14-year playoff drought.
