Deputies: Assault charge filed after ‘intentional’ Phelps crash

Deputies arrested a man after a crash in Ontario County that investigators now say was intentional.

Dane Cook, 45, of Brockport, faces a charge of first-degree assault following the February crash in the Town of Phelps.

Ontario County Sheriff’s deputies responded around 4 p.m. Feb. 20 to a single-vehicle crash at the intersection of State Route 488 and Waddell Road in Clifton Springs.

Investigators say Cook intentionally drove the vehicle at a high rate of speed and crashed with the intent to cause serious physical injury to a passenger in the car.

Both people in the vehicle were hurt in the crash.

Emergency crews flew one patient from the scene by Mercy Flight. Ambulance crews transported the other to a hospital for treatment.

Deputies said the vehicle was traveling fast on wet roads and failed to navigate a bend in State Route 488. The car then drove through two residential yards, a pool, and a porch, causing significant property damage.

Fire departments from Clifton Springs, Seneca Castle, Manchester, and Shortsville assisted at the scene along with Phelps Ambulance and Finger Lakes Ambulance.

Deputies arrested Cook on March 4 following the investigation. Authorities transported him to the Ontario County Jail, where he is awaiting a CAP Court appearance.

He is expected to appear in Phelps Town Court at a later date. Authorities have requested an order of protection for the passenger involved in the crash.

Both occupants have since been released from the hospital.
