Advocates in Tompkins County say housing shortages and low wages for care workers are limiting support for people with developmental disabilities, according to Tompkins Weekly.
Local leaders marked Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month by highlighting ongoing barriers, including staffing shortages that have already reduced services and eliminated about 80 residential beds in the county. Advocates say state funding limits make it difficult for agencies to offer wages high enough to attract workers.
Community groups are working to improve resources and awareness, including creating a guide to help families navigate support programs and planning a developmental disabilities resource fair later this year.
