Iran names interim leadership council

Iran’s leadership shifted fast after the death of its longtime supreme leader, according to The Associated Press.

Officials named Ayatollah Alireza Arafi to an interim council now running the country following the killing of Ali Khamenei. The council will govern until the Assembly of Experts selects a new supreme leader.

Arafi, 66, serves as the council’s jurist member and previously sat on both the Assembly of Experts and the Guardian Council. Khamenei appointed him to the Guardian Council in 2019. The leadership shake-up comes amid escalating conflict in the region, rising oil prices, and international reaction to the U.S.-Israeli strikes that reshaped Iran’s political future.
