Cayuga Nation legal challenge stalls Wells College sale

A legal fight is heating up over the $12.5 million sale of the former Wells College campus, according to Spectrum News. The Cayuga Nation and a competing bidder asked a judge Tuesday to block the deal with the Hiawatha Institute for Indigenous Knowledge.

The Cayuga Nation argues it holds ancestral ties to the Aurora property and opposes plans to use about 20% of the site for an Indigenous campus while turning the rest into commercial space.

Wells College shut down in June 2024 after leaders said it lacked funds to keep operating. Any sale of the property now requires court approval, and a judge will decide whether the transaction can move forward.
