Flashing blue lights outside a Hornell 7-Eleven now spark a city showdown, according to the Hornell Evening Tribune. Officials say the store’s new surveillance tower on Canisteo Street blinds drivers and disturbs nearby homes.
The Board of Public Safety sent a Feb. 12 letter demanding the company remove the unit or shut off its lights by Feb. 20. Mayor John Buckley said the cameras aren’t the issue. He argued the bright, eye-level flashes create glare and raise crash risks.
City leaders say state rules ban roadway-visible flashing lights that impair drivers. They warned 7-Eleven they could pursue enforcement if the lights stay on. The company hasn’t publicly responded.
