Quick response saves Sodus home from fire

A fast-moving garage fire threatened a Sodus home Tuesday, but quick action by firefighters and residents kept the damage from spreading.

Sodus Fire Rescue crews were dispatched just after noon to a possible structure fire while members were already at the station following an earlier water-related call.

Firefighters arriving on scene found a garage fully involved, with the home just three feet away and at immediate risk. Chiefs on scene recognized the garage was a total loss but saw a narrow window to save the house.

With no time to spare, crews stretched a hose line and pushed into heavy smoke. The homeowner and his son, both current and former members of the department, assisted with the initial attack until additional crews arrived from Wallington and East Williamson.

Fire officials said the garage was destroyed, but the house suffered only minor charring. Given the proximity of the fire, crews called the outcome a major success.

Fire officials praised the teamwork and split-second decisions that prevented the fire from spreading further, calling it a reminder of the risks firefighters take to protect their community — even when the call involves people they know.
