Tick cases spike, Canandaigua eyes new plan

Lyme disease cases in Canandaigua have exploded, pushing city leaders to consider a new response, according to the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle. Reported Lyme cases in Ontario County jumped from 31 in 2020 to 337 in 2025, alarming officials.

The environmental committee of Canandaigua City Council plans to discuss forming a temporary advisory group focused on tick-borne disease education and prevention. Council leaders say existing warnings haven’t slowed the surge, especially as deer populations rise.

The proposed committee would include community experts and coordinate with county and state health partners to develop evidence-based strategies. City officials say the goal is simple: better protect residents who spend time outdoors as tick-related illnesses continue climbing.
