Shawna Black chosen to lead legislature

A party-line vote reshaped county leadership Tuesday as lawmakers tapped a familiar face, according to The Ithaca Voice.

The Tompkins County Legislature elected Shawna Black as chair in a 13–3 vote, with Democrats backing her over Republican Mike Sigler. Black returns to the role after previously serving as chair in 2022 and 2023.

She highlighted a newly expanded 16-seat legislature split evenly between new and returning members. Black said the county must respond locally as federal leaders pull back funding and public benefits, stressing stability and resolve at home.
