Asbestos forces Schuyler museum closure

Visitors won’t be walking through the doors anytime soon after a hazardous discovery shut down a local landmark, according to WETM.

The Schuyler County Historical Society Museum closed for urgent renovations after crews found asbestos beneath old carpeting. Leaders decided to expand the project, using the disruption to push long-planned upgrades.

Plans include a new accessible entrance, an elevator, expanded archives, and new exhibit space to better showcase more than 200 years of county history. The work aims to open the museum’s research library to the public for the first time.

The project uses grant funding and a $300,000 capital campaign, with reopening dependent on final state and village approvals.
