11 killed in Hanukkah shooting at Sydney beach

At least 11 people died in a mass shooting during a Hanukkah event at Bondi Beach, an attack Australian leaders are calling antisemitic terrorism, Associated Press reports.

The victims included Rabbi Eli Schlanger of Chabad of Bondi, which organized the public menorah lighting. The tragedy follows a sharp rise in antisemitism across Australia, fueled by global tensions over the war in Gaza.

Jewish leaders say the government has failed to act as hate crimes surge, especially in Sydney and Melbourne. Officials haven’t confirmed if Iran, previously blamed for past attacks, was involved.
