New York Among Top 10 U.S. States Where Getting to Work Takes the Most Time

A new study reveals that New York faces the longest average travel time to work in the United States.

The research by global executive search firm Keller analyzed U.S. states based on the average mean travel time to work between 2021 and 2023. The results were calculated using U.S. Census data to rank where workers commute the most.

New York ranks first with an average mean travel time to work of 32.4 minutes between 2021 and 2023. The Empire State reported mean work commutes of 31.4 minutes in 2021, 33 minutes in 2022, and 32.8 minutes in 2023.

Looking at the study, a spokesperson from Keller commented,

“New York’s position at the top is no surprise. Dense urban centers like New York City create bottlenecks across roadways and transit lines. Despite extensive public transit, the sheer volume of commuters pushes average travel times far beyond the national norm.”
