Cayuga County Sheriff Brian Schenck will not seek third term

After nearly 30 years in law enforcement, Cayuga County Sheriff Brian Schenck announced he will not run for a third term.

Schenck, who has served as sheriff since 2018, shared the news in a public statement released Monday, Nov. 11. His current term runs through the end of 2026. He said he remains committed to fulfilling his duties until then but plans to step aside to pursue new opportunities and spend more time with his family.

“It has truly been the honor of a lifetime,” Schenck wrote. “I am deeply proud of our organization and of the men and women, past and present, who have served with dedication and professionalism.”

Schenck’s law enforcement career spans nearly three decades with the Cayuga County Sheriff’s Office. He said serving as sheriff for the last eight years has been a privilege and a responsibility he’s never taken lightly.

While reflecting on his future, Schenck said he believes the time is right for new leadership. He expressed confidence that his successor will continue the mission of maintaining public safety and strengthening what he described as “your Sheriff’s Office, which belongs to the people we serve.”

He thanked the community for its trust and support throughout his career.
