Ontario County shines green to honor local veterans

As Veterans Day approaches, Ontario County is lighting its government buildings green to recognize the more than 7,000 veterans who call the county home — and to raise awareness about the challenges many face after service.

The county has joined the nationwide Operation Green Light campaign, illuminating the Ontario County Courthouse and the Geneva Complex in green from November 4 through November 11.

Residents and businesses are encouraged to participate by placing green lights in their windows or on their buildings.

“By shining a green light, we let our veterans know that they are seen, appreciated, and supported,” said Susan Smith, Director of the Ontario County Veterans Service Agency. “It’s also a way to start conversations that can lead veterans to the help they may need.”

Ontario County’s veteran population stands at over 7,000, making up 7.6% of the county’s population — higher than the national average. Operation Green Light is one way the county is showing it stands behind those who’ve served.

Originally launched in New York in 2021, Operation Green Light has since expanded across the country, supported by the New York State Association of Counties (NYSAC), the NYS Council of Educational Association (NYSCEA), and the National Association of Counties (NACo).

The Ontario County Board of Supervisors unanimously passed a resolution supporting the effort on October 2, formally endorsing the weeklong observance and encouraging all residents to take part.
