Crews continue restoring power across the Finger Lakes after damaging winds

Thousands of RG&E and NYSEG customers across the Finger Lakes and Southern Tier remain without power early Monday morning after strong winds swept through the region Sunday.

Both utilities reported widespread damage from downed trees, broken poles, and fallen wires as gusts topped 45 miles per hour. Crews worked through the night and are expected to continue restoration efforts throughout the day Monday as additional outages remain possible.

As of early Monday, NYSEG reported roughly 5,000 customers still without power across its service area. The hardest-hit areas included Steuben, Schuyler, Chemung, Broome, Chenango, Tioga, Ontario, Wayne, Seneca, and Yates counties. RG&E reported similar impacts across Monroe, Ontario, Wayne, Livingston, and Allegany counties.

County-by-county outages

Updated outage data shows the following impacts across the Finger Lakes and Southern Tier:

  • Wayne County: 1,330 customers without power out of 26,777 total
  • Schuyler County: 1,189 out of 9,972
  • Chenango County: 759 out of 23,307
  • Steuben County: 337 out of 42,876
  • Broome County: 168 out of 91,073
  • Tompkins County: 100 out of 48,784

Altogether, more than 3,200 customers across the broader region remain without power as of 4 a.m. Monday.

Ongoing response

NYSEG and RG&E say more than 100 lineworkers and 20 tree crews are in the field, working to clear debris and make repairs. The companies are also warning residents to stay away from any downed wires, which may still be live, and to report hazards by calling 1-800-572-1131 for NYSEG or 1-800-743-1701 for RG&E.

Officials say crews will continue assessing damage and restoring service throughout Monday as winds ease.
